Versione articolo In Italiano

Every Kiter has his own Master, one that inspired and influenced the way of flying kites.
For me, the unique Master in kite flying is Ray Bethell.

Instead of listing all the awards and records that he won
(and that you can see on his website www.raybethell.com)
also it is a must to check out his Bio,
let me share with you one of the most precious memory that I have of Ray Bethell.

We met him in 2001, when we took part for the first time at the Cervia Kite Festival. We were quite new on the field and we only had a couple of kites, and even not acrobatic one. Because of that we didn’t share the main Kite arena. We were there just to enjoy the wind, the beach and the sun and yes, also trying to improve our flying skills.

It was an early morning when we got to know Ray. We were trying our new acrobatic kites (bought the day before), trying to flying pairs team together, when Ray saw us and came over close walking on the beach. He stayed there for a while watching us, then he moved closer, then he bent down and picked up 2 wooden sticks off the sand. I will never forget the following minutes: he stayed there with us, teaching us how to move our body, hands, and lines, giving the kites the unique grace and beauty that he portrays when he fly’s his kites.

I was more than amazed as I never thought that a Master like him could leave his kites for a moment to teach us the right way to fly, he used the sticks as two kites showing us how to follow each other also other simple moves, Ray also touched our hands with the stick when we were not following what he was trying to teach us. That’s why for me he is the Master of Kites. During the years we also got to know Ray as a Man: who became our friend, we saw him flying kites with intimate pain and sometimes with tears in his eyes, caused by a fall the day before hurting his shoulder, but he still flew as always with the same grace, love and passion for life. I’ve always said that he is like a big Grandad for all the children that dream for his signature on their kites. He is also a great Man in the eyes of all the people that meet him during the kite festivals, people from all over the world. If you want to meet him, just go on the beach in the early morning, he is always the first to arrive and the last one that leave the beach along with his lovely and always smiling Dolores. If you want to speak to him and shake his hand, don`t be afraid he will not only welcome you,but you will receive also a big big hug and a smile that you will always remember meeting Ray. If you want to congratulate to him after his performance , just wave your hands in the air, so he can understand your appreciation (and you are always allowed to bring him something fresh to drink). I always cry when I see him flying… because, this is the truth, he doesn’t fly a kite, he flies with his kites! So thank you Ray and see you in Cervia!!!

Thank you Ray for reading.
With Respect, Cristina

Grazie Ray e… ci vediamo a Cervia!
